I think a big intimidation in getting a dream off the ground is not knowing where to start.
A good thing about this thing called the internets is you have access to the pretty much everything you need to make your dream a reality.
A dream of mine is to publish a comic book. Does it have to be with Marvel or DC? It would be nice, but as long as I saw it in print I would feel like I rule the school.
The same thing about publishing a book. It doesn't have to be an unreachable goal because of publishers and their denials.
I've listed a few links below for you guys to check out. Maybe you know about them, maybe you don't.
Comic Book Publishing - http://www.comixpress.com/
This is a pretty neat site that I feel is the best online printer for comic books. You upload your book to their site, it will be available in their marketplace and printed on demand. You get a cut. A newer option is available for distribution by comic book stores who like indy comics.
Book Publishing - http://www.lulu.com/
If you've thought about publishing your own book, you've probably been here. You upload your material and you can sell your book in the marketplace as well. They can publish books, cookbooks, e-books, calendars, dvds and cds. My wife and I are more than likely going to be making a children's book through this site once we get around to it.
Blog to Books - http://www.blurb.com/ and http://blog2print.sharedbook.com/blogworld/printmyblog/index.html
Blurb looks like it could be the higher quality of the two sites. Basically the same concept as the above examples.
Online Printing - http://www.printplace.com/
When I was in real estate, I would use this place to make brochures or other materials. If you're interested in starting a magazine, you can do it here as well. Again, just upload your info and they'll ship it to you.
I hope this helps you all out and maybe getting to that first step won't be so intimidating.
Eric.
