I saw this a lot during basketball season, which I coach. It affected parents, coaches and eventually the kids. The unreal expectations hurt the kids the most. Eventually they lose interest in the sport or develop a complex because they can't 'live up' to the hype that their parents or coaches are putting on them. Whether it's rec or travel the expectations should start with safety and fun and be followed by fundamentals and sportsmanship. Becoming proficient is great, but only something that a small percentage can attain at a young age or any age for that matter. I think it is up to the coach to set a realistic tone early on and go from there. Just my opinion.
